2013-2014 Programming Press Release
Oakville Rangers Announces Programming Updates for the 2013-2014 Season
Oakville, ON - The Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) is pleased to announce programming updates for the 2013-2014 season.
The MOHA has undertaken a complete review of the Oakville Ranger Representative programming and working under the direction of the Town Rep Committee and Vice President, Town Rep – Graham Burton.
This season, the MOHA has implemented a Hockey Development Program, led by long-time Oakville Rangers Coaches, Dave Crozier and Ian Taylor, that will include a player-centric approach to development with the following goals:
The goal of this approach is to produce players who are technically proficient, tactically aware, physically athletic and mentally confident and to continually develop players to play at the next level.
There are three key initiatives that the Oakville Rangers Hockey Development will undertake this season:
Coach Support & Mentoring
The first initiative is to affect player development through development of our coaches. This will include creating a network of support for coaches that will include resources, in-house clinics and specialty sessions. This will also include the mentoring of coaches through observation of training session and game environments. Investing in our coaches will benefit all players in our organization.
Age-Group Development
The second initiative is to develop an age-group development philosophy. This means creating consistency in what is being taught and developing the deepest talent pool at each age-group. Taking the same approach as school, the goal will be to ensure core curriculum will be introduced to players whether they play AAA or AE and will meet the age-specific needs of our players.
It is crucial that we do a great job with 5-12 year-old players to ensure a foundation of technical skills so players will be able to successful as they move through their minor hockey experience.
Programming Pilot
The MOHA will implement the following pilot program next season with the goal of providing additional playing and development opportunities for our players:
All current AE teams will move up and play at the A Level
Due to the overwhelming success of Ranger teams at the AE level, the Oakville Rangers AE teams will move up and play at the A level in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League’s Smith Division. This pilot fulfills the stated goal to provide enhanced development opportunities for players.
Team selection will continue as in the past with the A team being selected prior to the AE team. For purposes of league standings, the A team will be referred to as A-Red and the AE team as A-Blue.
The Rangers will ice two (2) teams at the Minor Peewee AA Level
The Oakville Rangers Minor Peewee (2002 birth-year) A team will move up and play at the AA level in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League’s Bowen Division. The 2002 age-group has been selected to participate in this pilot program due to the overall depth of players, consistent philosophy of the team’s coaching staffs and overall success of all four teams.
Team selection will continue as in the past with the AA team being selected prior to the A team. For purposes of league standings, the AA team will be referred to as AA-Red and the A team as AA-Blue.
AE2 Expand AE2 Programming
In order to provide additional playing opportunities at the Rep Level, the Oakville Rangers will expand the AE2 program from two (2) to four (4) teams at the Minor Peewee, Peewee, Minor Bantam and Bantam age-groups.
In conjunction with the AE pilot where AE teams will play at the A level; the AE2 teams will move up and play at the AE level in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League’s Harrison Division. Team selection will continue as in the past with the AE team being selected prior to the AE2 team.
Tyke 3 programming will no longer be provided
The Tyke 3 program conflicts with the MOHA’s stated goals of providing fundamental skill development and consistency in what is taught to entry-level players. The MOHA’s Timbit/Initiation Program has been recognized across the OMHA and Canada for its quality and for providing players with foundational skill development.
The Oakville Rangers will ice 40 teams this season, the most in its history, with the goal of providing the best environment for players to develop. At the same time, more Oakville hockey players will have the opportunity play Rep hockey in their community.
All programming initiatives will go through a full review prior to the 2014-2015 season by the Town Rep Committee with input from key stakeholders.
“The MOHA has taken a leadership position in player development; one that may sacrifice winning trophies, for one that will see put player development first. Winning is not our focus or priority. Ironically, winning is often the by-product of a consistent and thorough skill development program, which we will put in place”, said Vice-President of Town Rep, Graham Burton.
“The MOHA and Rep Rangers will continue to take a leadership role in community sport with the goal of providing the highest quality program in Ontario and Canada.”

Congratulations to Minor Midget AAA Ranger Matt Spencer who was named Minor Hockey Player of the Year for the OMHA by the Ontario Hockey League this past weekend.
Spencer has had a fantastic season with the Rangers scoring 17 goals and 39
assists for 56 points in 71 games.
NORTH OAKVILLE – The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) is proud to announce the two teams that it will send to the 2013 Under 16 OHL Gold Cup taking place May 9 – 12 at the Sportsworld Arena in Kitchener.
The four day tournament will feature 8 teams representing the ALLIANCE, GTHL, HNO, NOHA, ODHA and OMHA stacked with the top 160 Under-16 players in Ontario.
The two OMHA teams were comprised after extensive regular season evaluation that culminated in an evaluation camp held in Oakville March 30th. The team features 40 OHL Priority Draft selections from 16 Minor Midget AAA teams.
“The OMHA has a long and proud tradition of developing some of the top hockey talent in the world,” said OMHA U16 Director of Operations, Chris McCleary. “This event will be a step in identifying and developing the next crop of elite players in Ontario.”
Seven members of the OHL Cup winning Oakville Rangers were picked for the White team, including all three first round picks in the recent Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
Matt Spencer, Kyle Capobianco and Brett McKenzie, the third, seventh and 10th picks, respectively, were all chosen for the roster. Joining them are Jesse Barwell, Andrew Burns, Sean Kohler and Adam Craievich. Benjamin Blacker, an Oakville native who plays his minor hockey in Brampton, was picked for the Black team roster.
“The OMHA is proud to participate in the Under 16 OHL Gold Cup. This program has become the entry point for players into the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence.” said Ian Taylor, Director, Development Programs for the OMHA. “This program represents a development opportunity to give players the tools to succeed in the high performance stream of Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) and also begins to identify players to participate in international competitions.”
The 2013 OHL Gold Cup will be used as part of an evaluation and selection process for Team Ontario that will compete at the World Under 17 Challenge.
Congratulations to the Oakville Rangers Minor Midget AAA team for being the first OMHA team to capture the OHL cup since 2006!
The Oakville Rangers received two-goal performances from Adam Craievich and Sean Kohler to capture their first OHL Cup title by a score of 5-1 over the Toronto Marlboros at Herb Carnegie Arena in North York.
Craievich, who also scored twice in Oakville's 6-1 Semi-Final win over the York Simcoe Express, was named Player of the Game and finished with five goals and seven points in seven games to earn the Tim Adams Memorial Trophy presented to the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. "I got a lucky bounce on the first one. It just came to me and I put it high short side," Craievich said. "It was nice to get that second one too to give us a two goal lead and we never looked back."
Marlboros Player of the Game Mitchell Stephens put his club on the board early in the second period to tie the score 1-1, but the Rangers pulled away with a pair of second period goals of their own followed by two more in the third period to secure the victory.
Adrian Clark earned the win in goal for the Rangers finishing the tournament with a 3-1-0 record including a shutout victory and a tournament best goals-against-average of 0.75.
The top ranked OMHA Champion Rangers were making their first appearance in the OHL Cup Finals since the tournament became a minor midget showcase in 2003, up against the second ranked GTHL Champion Marlboros who were making their seventh straight OHL Cup Finals appearance collecting tournament victories in 2011 and 2009.
Head coach Duncan Harvey's Rangers overcame a slow start to the tournament that saw them tie the Huron Perth Lakers and lose to the Central Ontario Wolves to earn a playoff spot with consecutive shutouts to end the round robin. "I'm so proud," said Harvey. "To get these guys to where they are now after that slow start, facing some great teams, it was outstanding. Hats off to everyone that played."
The Rangers had to overcome a Quarter-Final scare from the Halton Hurricanes. They trailed 1-0 with just minutes to play, but Brett McKenzie spoiled Hurricanes goaltender Michael McNiven's shutout bid with 3:09 left in the third period and Kyle Capobianco won the game with an overtime power play goal. "To think that we were about three minutes away from getting knocked out, to where we are today, just shows these guys have done a great job at fighting through adversity," said Harvey.
Craievich and Mark Bzowey, who also scored twice in the Semi-Final, led the team past the Express and into the final against the Marlboros. The Marlboros finished second in their division behind the Barrie Jr. Colts, who went through the round robin undefeated. They knocked off the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs and TPH Thunder in two tight one-goal games to earn their place in the Championship. "It's indescribable," said Rangers captain and OMHA Player of the Year Matt Spencer. "It's such a great feeling. We put so much time and effort this year and to come out with this great win, it's just something else." Spencer helped the Rangers become the first OMHA club to capture an OHL Cup title since 2006 when Steven Stamkos and the Markham Waxers defeated the Toronto Red Wings.
The Rangers yielded a tournament-low four goals against in the round robin. They kept up their stingy defensive play in the playoffs, surrendering just one goal against in each of their three games. "I just said to the boys in the locker room after the game that we lost (against Central Ontario), 'I'm real sorry for what happened boys but we're gonna get back in this. We're gonna come back and we're gonna win this tournament.' And that's what we did."
Hockey Night in Canada star and Minor Hockey advocate Don Cherry presented the OHL Cup to Spencer, with Gold and Silver medals presented by OHL Commissioner David Branch as part of the post-game ceremonies.
The mandate of the MOHA Rep Coach Selection Committee is to appoint the best coach possible for each Rangers team. The selection process involves a thorough examination of many factors relating to each applicant, including their interview, Parent Survey results, references, player ranking, experience, and information gathered from observation of games and practices. The decision process has been extremely involved and challenging, not only because of the significant number of applicants, but because of their high calibre.
Over the course of 10 sessions spanning four weeks, the 10-person committee has considered 56 applicants across 10 divisions. Over 40 interviews were conducted; amounting to an equal number of face-to-face hours spent getting to know the candidates individually. The results of more than 350 completed Parent Surveys were analyzed, and paired with information gleaned from conversations with 55 Rangers families who asked for follow-up phone calls. In excess of 65 references were also contacted to provide personal feedback about the candidates.
We are pleased to announce that the slate of 2013-2014 Rangers coaches consists of 21 returning Head Coaches, seven Assistant Coaches taking on a Head Coach position, and three House League coaches joining the Rangers family. A few of the younger age divisions will have coaches selected immediately following try-outs (teams will be chosen by the Player Selection Committee), a process that has worked well in the past.
Graham Burton, VP Rep, notes that 'the process of Rep coach selection is a tremendous undertaking and those involved have the most important aspect of all of this at heart – our young aspiring hockey players and future leaders of our community'.
We would like to thank each and every applicant for their interest, dedication and commitment to the Oakville Rangers program and players. We congratulate and welcome the following coaches for the 2013-2014 season:
