Frequently Asked Questions

The MOHA Executive and Board of Directors are pleased to report to our members that we have received our annual audit report from BDO Dunwoody. This report covers the 2008/09 playing season / fiscal year. A copy of this report with our audited financial statements is available for review by any member at our office at 1026 Speers Road.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all members that we are quite happy to be approached to discuss any aspect of the Association's operation.

Please feel free to submit any additional questions that you feel should be included in that section. While we do not guarantee that all will be added, we will review all submissions to assess general interest.

Submit any questions to info@moha.on.ca with "FAQ" in the title line.

Where are you located ?

We are located at 1026 Speers Rd., Unit 8 & 9 which is just west of Fourth Line. We are in the same building as the Speers Road Animal Hospital.

What rink will my son or daughter play at?

It depends on the ice availability and where the division has been scheduled due to the number of teams in the division and the block of ice available. At the present time our VP of House league is working on the schedule. The younger age groups play on the weekends.

When do they start playing contact?

In the Town Rep system the kids start playing contact at Minor Atom. In the house league there is no contact in the white divisions, but there is contact in the red division starting at Minor Peewee.

What is the difference between Red and White?

Red and white are in the House league of the MOHA. The red division of the House league is a more competitive level of play, where body contact is allowed from Minor Peewee up. The players in the red divisions are of a higher skill level. The white level of the House league is not as competitive as the red level. They do not play contact in the white division. A player in white may move up to red as a player in red may move to white.

Will my child get to play Red?

It depends on your son or daughter's skill level and if he or she wants to play contact. Some kids do not want to play contact and some do. There is a draft in the red divisions and the coaches pick the players for their teams. If your son or daughter is judged as skilled enough and wants to play red, he or she will likely be there.

What if my child wants to play goal, do I have to buy equipment?

If your child wants to be goalie, you should let the league and coach know. It is up to the coach to pick a goalie if there is no one on the team that has specified that they want to play the position. In the younger divisions the MOHA provides the goalie equipment. As they get older the responsibility is for the player to get his own equipment.

Does the MOHA accelerate players?

The MOHA does not like to accelerate players, but each case is looked at on an individual basis.

How does the league select teams? What is a draft? How does it work?

The league like the teams to be balanced, so that all teams are competitive and level to each other in skill and caliber. This makes for a competitive and fun season for all players and parents involved. In the younger divisions players are put onto a team but from Minor Atom and up a draft takes place. This is where the coaches meet and pick there teams from rankings that have been done on the players from previous coaches. Each player is rated and evaluated so that he is placed properly in either the white or red division.

What equipment will my son need?

Helmet with full cage, mouth guard, neck guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, jock, hockey pants, shin guards, gloves, skates stick and hockey tape.

How often do they play? What about practices?

The House League teams play one game and practice per week. The Rep teams play two games per week and practice anywhere from one to three times per week.

When does the season start? When does it end?

The season for Town Rep starts around the middle of September. The fall tryouts and training camps start at the end of August - watch the Town Rep sections on this site for more information. The Rep teams usually end late in March. The House League starts in late September or early October and the Championship week for all divisions is held late March.

What if my child does not like playing, can I get a refund?

he MOHA will give refunds when the request is in writing and made before the October 31 cut off date. There is a $60.00 administration fee and as appropriate and reasonable pro rated charges will be applied for games or practices already passed.

What is "Extra Ice"?

Extra ice is ice that is purchased by your team (coach) on top of what is given to them by the MOHA. Usually teams will collect funds from the parents to purchase extra sheets of ice for practice or exhibition games.

Can my child play on the same team as their friends?

You can request that your son be on the same team as one of his friends, but there is no guarantee that this will happen. The goal of the MOHA is to make all teams equal in caliber and skill for a competitive season.

What is balancing?

Balancing is when a player or players are moved from one team to another within your division. This is done to make the team equal in caliber and skill so that one team is not winning all the games and one team losing all their games. This is done by the league convenor and VP House League.

Can I request a coach?

You may request a coach but there is no guarantee that you get the coach you want. Each coach usually picks his team from the draft.

Are you open?

We are open from 9:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Monday to Friday. If you wish to come to the office at a different time, please call first to ensure someone is there. (905) 338-9220. We have a mail slot should you wish to drop off something.

Is there anything else I should know or do?

Enjoy!!! Sit back and remember this is a game that the children play. Win or lose your child will have fun if you remember to keep the game in the right perspective.
